Repair or replace?
Emergency work is judged by whether the door can be returned to safe, balanced operation rather than by any fixed component life. A snapped spring, a damaged cable or a bent bottom bracket is replaced rather than straightened. A section deformed by impact may be replaceable on its own where the profile is still made, or may make full replacement the better value. What is never done is returning a door to service on a component that has already failed once under load.

A snapped counterbalance spring
The bang most people describe is a torsion spring failing. Once it goes, the door's full weight sits on the cables, the drums and the operator, and the door either will not lift or lifts crookedly.
A cable off its drum
A cable that has unwound or jumped its grooves lets one bottom corner drop while the other keeps rising. The door racks in the opening and rollers start to leave the track.
Impact damage
A vehicle contacting the door bends sections, brackets and often the track behind them. The door may still run for a cycle or two and then jam solid at the same point.
An operator or safety fault
A stripped gear set, a failed logic board or a photo-eye circuit that has lost alignment can leave a door mid-travel with no obvious mechanical damage at all.

Keep people and vehicles out from under a door that is stuck, leaning or hanging unevenly. Do not pull the manual release on a door that is part-way open with a broken spring: releasing it transfers the whole weight to whatever is holding it. Do not attempt to wind or unwind a torsion spring, remove a bottom bracket, or handle a cable under tension. Bottom fixtures are connected directly to the lift load and can move violently. Leave the door where it is, keep the area clear, and send the details through the form.

Make the door safe
The door is secured in position before anything is dismantled. Where it is unbalanced or partly derailed, it is supported so it cannot fall, and the operator is disconnected so no command can move it during the work.

Find the real fault
Springs, cables, drums, bottom brackets, rollers, track and the operator are all examined, because the component that stopped working is often not the one that started the sequence.

Stabilise or repair on the visit
Where the parts are on the van, the repair is completed and the door is rebalanced. Where a part has to be sourced, the door is left in a defined safe state, secured, with the situation explained in writing.

Test before signing off
The door is run by hand for balance, then under power through full travel, and the safety reversal and photo eyes are tested. Nothing is called finished on the strength of one successful cycle.

The door is stuck open and I cannot leave the house unsecured. What now?
Say exactly that in the form and include your community and the time you can give access. An open door with a failed spring cannot simply be pulled down: the weight it is carrying has nowhere to go, and forcing it risks a cable release or a section collapse. Where the door cannot be repaired on the visit, it can normally be secured in the closed position so the house is not left open while parts are sourced.
My car is trapped inside. Can it be freed the same day?
Often, and it helps enormously to say so in the request. Freeing a vehicle usually means getting the door safely open and holding it there rather than completing the full repair, so the two things can be sequenced: access first, then the proper repair once parts are confirmed. Photographs of the springs above the opening and of both bottom corners let the likely parts be identified before anyone attends.
Can I just use the manual release?
Only on a door that is closed and is not carrying a broken spring. The release cord disconnects the operator from the door; it does not support the door. On a balanced door that is safe and useful. On a door with a snapped spring, pulling the release hands the full weight to your arms or to whatever else is holding it. If the door is part-way open and you do not know why, leave the release alone.
Is a door hanging crooked actually dangerous?
Yes. A door out of square is loading rollers, hinges and cables in directions they were not designed for, and the failure mode is sudden rather than gradual: a roller leaves the track, a cable jumps a drum, and the section drops. Do not test it to see whether it still works, and do not park under it. Keep the area clear, note what happened just before it went crooked, and send that with the request.
