Lift cables are the link between the counterbalance system and the door itself. Each cable runs from a bottom fixture at a lower corner up to a grooved drum on the spring shaft, and the two must stay equal in length, correctly seated in their grooves, and free of broken strands. A cable that has come off a drum or gone slack is very often a symptom rather than the original fault: a seized roller, a snapped spring, a shifted track or a door racking in the opening will all take tension out of one side first.

Repair or replace?
Cable life depends on alignment, balance, frequency of use and exposure rather than on a fixed interval. Replacement is the right call whenever strands are broken, the wire is kinked or flattened, or corrosion has roughened the surface that runs over the drum. A cable that simply came off its drum may be reusable if it is genuinely undamaged and the underlying cause has been corrected, but the cheaper failure mode is always the one that gets fixed properly the first time. Sections do not need replacing because a cable failed.

What Actually Goes Wrong
Slack from a lift failure
A broken spring or a jammed roller removes tension from the cable. Once slack develops the cable loses its winding pattern on the drum and the door starts to lift unevenly.
Track or bracket movement
A loose vertical track or a failed bottom roller pulls the door off its normal travel line, changing the angle at which the cable approaches its drum until it jumps a groove.
Strand deterioration
Moisture, road salt residue, abrasion at the bottom fixture and repeated bending over the drum break individual wires. A cable can look serviceable until the broken strands near a bend are found.
An uncontrolled previous reset
Cables need equal tension set while the spring system and the door are held under control. Rewinding one side casually leaves the door out of level and the drums fighting each other.

A frayed, kinked or flattened cable is replaced with a correctly sized lift cable. Where one cable has failed, both are normally renewed so the pair is the same age and length.

Both drums are set with equal cable wind while the counterbalance is controlled, the door is checked to rise level off the floor, and it is then run under power through full travel.

Can a cable just be put back on the drum?
Sometimes, if the cable is undamaged and the reason it came off has been corrected. What that requires is control: the door supported, the spring tension managed, and both drums set to equal wind so the door rises level. Doing it without that control usually produces a door that lifts crookedly and pulls the cable off again within a few cycles. Any cable with broken strands or a kink is replaced rather than reseated.
Are broken strands actually dangerous?
Yes, on two counts. They reduce the cable's strength at the exact point where it bends over a drum or a fixture, which is where the load concentrates, so a partly broken cable is on a path to failing completely. They are also sharp enough to cut skin through a light glove. Broken strands mean the door should not be relied on for continued use and the cable should not be handled casually.
Why did only one cable come off?
Because something took tension out of one side first. A seized roller, a shifted vertical track, an uneven floor at one corner or a spring problem will all unbalance the pair, and the side that loses tension is the side that loses its winding pattern. The other cable can look completely normal while the door is unsafe. That is why the fix includes finding the cause rather than only rewinding the drum.
Should both cables be replaced together?
Normally yes. The pair has done identical work and been exposed to the same moisture, so the survivor is at a similar stage even if it looks better. Fitting two cables of the same specification and the same age also removes length mismatch as a future cause of uneven lift, which is worth more than the small saving of replacing one. Drums and bottom fixtures are inspected at the same time.
