The guide system is what keeps a door travelling in a controlled path: rollers running in vertical and horizontal track, hinges connecting the sections, brackets holding the track to the jamb and the ceiling. Repair or replace?
Rollers are the consumable in this system and are usually the first part of a door to need renewal, particularly on a garage used as the main entrance. Hinges last longer but elongate at the pin holes once rollers have been dragging. Track itself is durable and is replaced only where it is kinked, corroded through or has been bent by impact. Correcting alignment and renewing rollers early is what protects the more expensive components: springs, cables and the operator all last longer behind a door that runs freely.

Seized roller bearings
Nylon and steel rollers both rely on a small bearing. Once it fails the roller slides rather than rolls, which grinds against the track and puts a sideways load into the hinge that holds it.
Impact and accumulated knocks
A vehicle, a ladder or stored items striking the vertical track leaves a kink. Rollers ride over it every cycle, and the repeated shock loosens the fixings holding the track in place.
Fixings working loose
Lag bolts and jamb brackets take a small shock on every start and stop. As they loosen the track shifts out of plumb, the door stops running square, and rollers begin to bind at the curve.
An opening that has moved
Frost movement and settlement can leave a garage opening slightly out of square. The door then seals on one side and gaps on the other, and one roller rides high in its track.

Do not try to lever a door back into its track. A derailed door is supporting itself unevenly, and prying at a roller or a section can release it suddenly. Keep clear of the cables and the bottom brackets while the door is off track, since a derailment often leaves cable tension unequal. Do not run the operator to see whether the door will re-seat itself; that turns a two-roller problem into bent track and damaged sections. Leave it as it is and describe which corner has come out.

Watch the door work
The door is run by hand and under power while the full travel is observed, because binding, drag and a high-riding roller are far easier to identify in motion than from a static inspection.

Vertical track plumb, horizontal track level, the radius at the curve, jamb bracket security and ceiling hanger condition are all checked, and anything loose is corrected before parts are swapped.

Seized rollers, worn hinges and damaged track sections are replaced with correctly sized parts. Straightening a badly kinked track section is a temporary answer and is treated as one.

Will new rollers stop the noise?
They will if seized bearings are the cause, which they often are. What they will not fix is a track that has been knocked out of line, a loose jamb bracket, or an opening that has moved out of square, and fitting new rollers into a bent track simply wears the new parts. So alignment and fixings are checked first, then rollers and hinges are renewed. Done in that order the noise goes and stays gone.
Is nylon better than steel for rollers?
For noise, generally yes: a good sealed-bearing nylon roller runs quieter than an unsealed steel one, which matters most where there is living space above or beside the garage. For load, the specification has to match the door, and heavier insulated doors need rollers rated accordingly. Stem length and bearing quality matter more than the material on its own, and both are chosen for the door on the opening rather than by preference.
One side of my door has a gap at the bottom. Is that the track?
It may be the track, or it may be the opening. A door that seals along one side and gaps at the other is not sitting square, and the cause is either alignment of the vertical track and its brackets, or a slab and jamb that have moved with frost over many winters. Both are correctable, but the fix differs: one is an adjustment, the other means accommodating an opening that is no longer true geometry.
Can a bent track section be straightened instead of replaced?
For a minor deformation, sometimes, and it can get a door running again on the visit. For a real kink, straightening leaves a hard spot that rollers ride over on every cycle, and the repeated shock works the fixings loose again. Replacing the affected length restores a smooth running surface and costs less than the roller, hinge and section wear that a permanent hard spot causes over a couple of years.
