How do I test balance myself without touching the springs?
Close the door, pull the manual release with the door fully down, and lift the door by hand to about waist height, then let go gently while keeping clear. A balanced door stays roughly where it is. One that drops is under-supported; one that flies up is over-tensioned. Stop the test at the first sign that the door is heavy or wants to run, and do not repeat it on a door with a visible gap in a spring coil.
Can the springs be adjusted rather than replaced?
Yes, when the steel is sound. Tension drifts over thousands of cycles, and a set adjusted properly to the door's actual weight will restore balance and take the strain off the operator. What adjustment cannot fix is fatigue, corrosion between coils, or a pair that no longer matches because only one side was ever replaced. Why is the noise coming from above the door rather than the tracks?
Because that is where the shaft, bearings and drums live. A dry or worn end bearing produces a rhythmic squeak once per shaft revolution; a loose drum or a shifting centre anchor produces a knock at the start of travel. Those are distinguishable on site and are cheap parts to renew while the assembly is open. What they should not be treated as is a lubrication problem to be sprayed and forgotten.
