When a counterbalance spring fails it usually announces itself: a bang loud enough to be heard through the house, then a door that will not lift or lifts only a few inches before stalling. A fractured torsion spring shows a visible gap in the coils; a failed extension spring hangs slack alongside the horizontal track. Replacement is not simply fitting a similar-looking spring. Wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction all have to match the door's weight and travel, and on a two-spring system both springs are treated as a set.
A correctly specified spring set, fitted as a matched pair and wound to the right turn count, gives service measured in cycles rather than seasons: several years of heavy daily use, longer where the garage is a secondary entrance. Replacing both springs on a two-spring door is standard practice because the surviving spring has completed the same cycle count as the one that broke. Bearings, drums and cables are inspected at the same time, since they are inexpensive relative to a second visit and they are what the new springs will be working through.
Work through the symptom first — some of these turn out to need no technician at all.
Every open and close winds and unwinds the steel. Springs are rated in cycles, and a household that uses the garage as its main entrance can reach that rating in a handful of years rather than a decade.
Moisture sitting between coils pits the wire and creates the stress point where the break starts. Unheated garages and doors that pass wet vehicles daily see this most.
A spring sized for a lighter door, or a heavier insulated door hung on the original spring set, means the steel has been working outside its intended range from day one.
Steel is less forgiving at low temperature, and a marginal spring is most likely to break on the first cycle of a cold morning rather than in the middle of a mild afternoon.
Whitby's dwelling profile explains why this is the most common call in the older half of the Town. Of 46,460 occupied dwellings, 3,810 date from 1960 or earlier and 7,700 from the 1961-1980 wave, and those two groups are where original extension-spring systems and long-serving torsion sets still turn up. Lynde Creek and West Lynde sit squarely in that band. At the other end, the 1990s peak of 8,910 dwellings, concentrated in areas such as Rolling Acres, is now reaching a second replacement rather than a first. Cold matters: with a January daily minimum near -8.5 C at the nearest official station, breaks cluster in the coldest weeks.
This is the highest-energy job on a residential garage door. A wound spring can release its stored energy in a fraction of a second, and the tools used matter as much as the technique: correctly sized winding bars, nothing improvised. Do not attempt to replace a torsion spring yourself, do not loosen a cone under load, and do not work under a door with a broken spring. On extension-spring systems, containment cables must run through the springs so a break cannot become a projectile. Report the symptom through the form and leave the door closed.
The door's weight and travel are established, and the existing spring wire size, inside diameter, length and wind are measured. Matching what was there is only correct if what was there was right.
The door is secured, the operator disconnected, and any remaining tension released in a controlled sequence with winding bars before the old springs, and their cones, come off the shaft.
New springs of the correct specification are fitted as a pair on a two-spring door, with bearings and drums inspected and renewed if worn, and cables checked and rewound evenly on both drums.
Springs are wound to the calculated turn count, the door is balance-tested by hand across full travel, and the operator's force and travel settings are reset before the safety reversal is tested.
